From crowded terminals to poor food options, airports can bring out the worst in people. Luckily, many airports are getting massive upgrades.
The industry took the opportunity to tackle construction projects while airports sat nearly empty during the Covid-19 pandemic, and it didn’t hurt that the Biden administration gave almost $1 billion to airports for upgrades. Here were some of the best airport transformations of 2022:
LaGuardia
The airport that President Biden once likened to a third-world country, has had one of the most remarkable transformations. In June they unveiled their new, high-tech Terminal B, a pedestrian bridge, an expanded American Airlines lounge, and more amenities.
LaGuardia’s Terminal C also got a $4 billion makeover, as Delta upgraded the area to feature centralized check-in areas, new restrooms, improved concession options, and USB and power outlets at every seat. Terminal C also has the world’s largest Delta Sky Club and it’s quite the sight.
LAX
Many know LAX to be a chaotic airport, but the airport is home to one of the best new lounges that opened in 2022: Delta’s West Coast flagship. It earned The Points Guy’s award for the Best New Lounge this year and it’s no wonder, considering that the luxurious 30,000-square-foot space can accommodate over 500 travelers.
The lounge has two buffets and two bars as well as a self-service candy bar. There are also private phone booths and marble shower suites, making it a great place for those who work on the go. Perhaps the best part of the lounge, however, is all the natural light and a sky deck that makes it feel less like you’re in an airport and more like you’re in a beautiful rooftop restaurant.
