Record-setting floods in the Appalachian region of Kentucky have killed at least 26 people, as search and rescue missions continue to seek out missing people. The figure was correct as of Sunday evening.
The floods have wiped out several communities in one of America’s poorest regions, prompting mudslides and widespread destruction in all regions affected. Cell service and power were out across the region as late as Friday morning, making rescue attempts more complex.
At least two children have been confirmed dead, with several others missing in the disaster, but hundreds of water and air rescues were successfully completed by emergency services. The rain continued through Friday, further complicating the situation. President Biden had already directed federal funds to the region to assist in the relief effort.
Unfortunately, more rain is set to plague the region in the coming days, worsening any effects already being felt. Governor Beshear has warned citizens to expect more flooding.
