With the Covid-19 pandemic along came an increase in remote work. As offices shut down, countries opened up their doors to welcome workers from all over the world. 2022 saw a huge spike in countries launching digital nomad visas, sometimes to the dismay of the local population. Still, most countries viewed it as a way to boost their economy in the aftermath of the pandemic.

Here are the countries that launched remote work visas in 2022:

  • Brazil: South America got its first digital nomad village in Pipa, Brazil–a great remote work destination if you love the surf and sand.

  • Costa Rica: Applications to the Central American paradise opened up this past July. To remote work in Costa Rica, you’ll need to earn a minimum of $3,000 per month.

  • Colombia: Back in October, Colombia opened up applications for remote workers to apply for two-year visas–a very enticing destination if you love reggaeton and a good cup of Colombian coffee.

  • Malaysia: Malaysia opened its doors and introduced a digital nomad visa that only requires an annual income of about $24k.

  • Portugal: The land of epic surf and delicious port wine announced plans to roll out a digital nomad visa that will last up to 12 months.

  • Ecuador: South American gem launched a ‘Rentista’ visa back in November and their monthly salary requirement is much lower than most places at about $1,266 per month.

  • Spain: Spain joined the digital nomad train and announced plans to roll out a visa that would last a whopping five years.

  • Bali: Though the tropical getaway has long been a remote worker haven, they unveiled a new six-month visa. Rumor has it that a 5-year visa is still on the table, too.
