Tourism officials in Puerto Rico are urging tourists not to cancel their trips to the island after Hurricane Fiona devastated the island last month.

“We want to assure visitors, who already planned travel to San Juan, that Puerto Rico is open and safe to travel to,” explained Discover Puerto Rico’s CEO, Brad Dean.

The bounceback is almost staggeringly quick. The damage to most places is said to have been power-related, which officials say has been been resolved, at least in popular tourism areas. The same unfortunately cannot be said for several areas in the western and southern parts of the island.

Airports and cruise ship ports have all fully reopened. Nearly all tourist attractions have reopened, even El Yunque National Forest, but some trails do remain closed.

It can be quite difficult to decide whether or not to cancel a trip after a natural disaster strikes. Some places are quicker to bounce back than others. Because every situation is different, you should check information from government sites and tourism boards for any directives they may have. For now, at least, Puerto Rico is saying ‘Live Boricua’ and don’t cancel your plans.

Plan on visiting Puerto Rico soon? Check out Marriott’s ‘Live Boricua’ Experience Packages, which offer unique rooms enhanced with art, crafts, decor, and delicacies centered around the island’s culture.
