Overview

American Airlines is one of the strongest domestic carriers when it comes to the value of its loyalty program, primarily due to brilliant award chart rates for partners. But many travelers pass over its co-branded cards in favor of their favorite airline. That could be a mistake, especially with the revamped premium offering from the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Legend Mastercard®.

The refreshed card went live on August 23, introducing a higher $695 annual fee, up from $595, but there’s more on offer to help offset the price tag. Citi and American Airlines have added new statement credits, boosted earning rates, made the card more useful for chasing AAdvantage elite status, and thrown in new hotel and rental car perks. All told, cardholders can now get up to $2,300 in annual value from the product.

Here’s what changed.

A Massive Welcome Offer

Let’s start with the big number.

New cardholders can currently earn 125,000 AAdvantage bonus miles after spending $15,000 within the first five months of account opening. American Airlines describes it as the card’s best offer ever.

It’s an enormous pile of AAdvantage miles, and I value them much higher than an equivalent number of Delta SkyMiles or United MileagePlus miles, but that $15,000 spending requirement is extremely high. You’ll need to average $3,000 in spending per month for five months to earn it, so it’s vital to ensure you can do this responsibly.

If you can, however, 125,000 AAdvantage miles can go a long way using its partner award chart. There are good deals on its own flights, but they seriously shine when redeeming with other airlines.

The Annual Fee Is Now $695

The biggest negative change is pretty obvious. The card’s annual fee has increased from $595 to $695. Authorized users cost $175 for up to three users, with another $175 charged for each additional user beyond that.

That places it firmly into premium-card territory, but there’s one big thing to remember: its most important benefit hasn’t disappeared: full Admirals Club membership. That’s super valuable and, if you fly regularly, can be a game changer.

That grants cardholders unlimited access to more than 100 Admirals Club and partner lounges, along with up to two guests or immediate family members. That’s actually become more valuable as a perk, as American has increased the price of standalone Admirals Club membership to as much as $1,400 annually. If it’s something you would pay for normally, it’s almost stupid not to open the card. Obviously, if you wouldn’t have usually bought the membership, it’s not a true saving, but it’s a phenomenal perk, all the same.

There’s a New $500 American Airlines Vacations Credit

The biggest new statement credit is worth up to $500 per calendar year on eligible American Airlines Vacations purchases.

There is a catch. Instead of receiving one $500 pot to use whenever you want, the benefit is divided into two periods. You can receive up to $250 in credits from January through June and another $250 from July through December.

Unfortunately, this isn’t a generic $500 American Airlines credit. You need to use it on eligible American Airlines Vacations travel packages or experiences. That distinction is important. If you already book through American Airlines Vacations, it’ll make a huge dent in the annual fee. But if you’ve never used the service and wouldn’t normally consider it, you probably shouldn’t value the benefit at anywhere close to $500.

Lyft Credits Have Improved

The card already offered Lyft credits, but Citi has boosted the maximum from $120 to $180 per year.

After taking three eligible Lyft rides during a calendar month, you’ll receive a $15 Lyft credit, up from the previous $10. Do that every month, and you’ll extract the full $180 annual value.

Again, this is only valuable if it matches your existing habits. Forcing unnecessary Lyft rides just to trigger a $15 credit defeats the point, so this will be situational.

There’s a New $100 American Airlines Credit

Cardholders can now receive up to $100 in statement credits each calendar year on eligible American Airlines inflight and Admirals Club purchases. This is replacing the previous 25% discount on eligible inflight food and beverage purchases for new cardholders.

Existing cardholders get a little more time with the old perk, with the 25% inflight discount remaining through September 30, 2026. Existing users also retain the old Grubhub benefit, worth up to $120 per year, through August 31, 2027. New cardholders no longer receive the Grubhub credit.

Earning Rates Have Improved Slightly

The Executive still earns 4x AAdvantage miles on eligible American Airlines purchases, increasing to 5x for the remainder of the calendar year if you can spend an enormous $150,000 in annual card spending. I shouldn’t need to tell you not to try to force that amount of spending for an extra point per dollar.

Pretty much everything else earns 1x besides Eligible AAdvantage Hotels and AAdvantage Cars, which now earn 12x miles per dollar, up from 10x. Again, these are highly specific, but if you spend a lot on American Airlines flights, it makes sense to have this. But there is still an argument to keep your earnings on a general travel card to allow you to transfer points.

Elite Status Just Got Easier to Earn

If you are a frequent American Airlines customer with an eye on elite status, this card is pretty much a non-negotiable. The changes will make you happy, too.

Executive cardholders can now earn 10,000 bonus Loyalty Points after reaching each of four thresholds during the same status qualification year:

  • 50,000 Loyalty Points

  • 90,000 Loyalty Points

  • 165,000 Loyalty Points

  • 240,000 Loyalty Points

That means you can now earn as many as 40,000 bonus Loyalty Points each year, double the previous maximum of 20,000.

If you’re a casual American flyer, this won’t mean much. But if you’re already pushing towards Platinum Pro or Executive Platinum status, another 20,000 potential Loyalty Points could make a huge difference to you.

New Omni and Avis Benefits

Citi has also pushed the card’s benefits beyond American Airlines itself.

Cardholders can now enroll for complimentary Omni Hotels & Resorts Champion status, the hotel program’s second-highest published tier. Benefits include potential room upgrades, early check-in, and late checkout, subject to availability. This is a bit of a niche program, but it has some incredible hotels.

You can also earn one Omni Free Night reward per calendar year after completing a qualifying stay of at least two consecutive nights booked directly with Omni. Just remember to enroll in the Champion benefit first.

You can also enroll for complimentary Avis President’s Club status through August 31, 2028, which gifts you benefits like upgrades, expedited service, and complimentary additional drivers. That’s on top of the card’s existing benefit of up to $120 per year in statement credits for eligible prepaid Avis and Budget rentals.

Both new additions are super specific, but interesting enough for you to consider using both and to get some value. Should they be a primary factor in your decision-making? Definitely not.

Is the Card Worth It?

The $695 annual fee means this still isn’t a card I’d recommend to the average traveler.

But that’s mainly because it’s not trying to be.

It’s designed for people who fly American Airlines regularly, value Admirals Club access, and ideally have some interest in earning AAdvantage elite status. If you fall into that group, it’s almost a no-brainer.

The annual fee has gone up by $100, but the card has added benefits that are worth more than that. Whether those apply to you or not is a different question altogether, but again, if you’re the ideal clientele, they probably will in some shape or form.

For infrequent American flyers, there are more flexible premium travel cards out there. For committed AAdvantage users, though, Citi has taken an already niche card and made it even better at serving those people.
