The US State Department has once again issued a travel warning for US citizens visiting Mexico, citing a high risk of crime and kidnapping, as well as increased cartel violence.

The new advisory comes on the heels of a shelter-in-place order issued for Americans in Tijuana after a string of cartel violence caused chaos and destruction in the region last week. In response, the Mexican government has also sent hundreds of members of the military special forces to Tijuana.

The US government is now recommending that Americans reconsider travel to several regions including Baja California and exercise increased caution in popular tourist destinations such as Mexico City and Quintana Roo.
