I imagine working at Twitter right now feels a lot like being an elf at the North Pole assembling and wrapping millions of gifts for Santa to deliver across the globe. Except instead of gifts, it’s mostly just horrifically bad political tweets and people live-tweeting the World Series.
Elon Musk’s public spat with Stephen King over $8 is apparently only part of the massive changes happening at Twitter. Since Musk took over at Twitter, employees have reportedly been working frighteningly long hours and racing against the clock to meet tight deadlines — and to save their jobs.
According to reports, working at Twitter looks a bit like this right now:
Employees are (proudly) tweeting out their in-office sleep spots
Musk will put an end to the company’s work-from-anywhere policy
Several managers have told staff to work 12-hour shifts, 7 days a week
Employees hope to avoid being part of the 50% of jobs being eliminated to cut costs
We all pretty much knew Twitter was in for a wild ride when Musk took over — mainly thanks to his grand ideas for improving the platform, notoriously eccentric approach to business, and general fondness for publicity. But while there’s reason to be hopeful about his self-proclaimed commitment to free speech and not letting Twitter become a “free for all hellscape,” it’s hard to believe that it’ll be an easy process.
