Make your list and check it twice because those online purchases might cost you a pretty penny soon. As the holiday season approaches, some retailers are adjusting their return policies.
Major retailer H&M recently joined the likes of Abercrombie and Zara in charging return fees on online orders. Other companies are shortening their return windows or adding restocking fees for returns. Soon enough, free returns could be a nostalgic memory, like Walkmans and Beanie Babies.
What the heck is bracketing?
With online shopping being only a quick trigger finger away, people aren’t just more likely to order things without thinking twice. Shoppers are also increasingly ‘bracketing‘ their purchases, meaning that they often buy the same item in multiple sizes or colors and return whatever they don’t want.
According to the National Retail Foundation, online returns cost retailers an estimated $218 billion in 2021, with increased shipping and labor costs making it even more costly for businesses.
To avoid the potential money suck that could be online returns, consider returning items to a brick-and-mortar store instead of shipping them back. Also, read the retailers’ return policy before ordering items and keep up to date with their holiday return policies.
