Southwest is continuing to make headlines
Southwest has been making headlines recently with changes to improve profitability, including a major update to its boarding process. The airline will soon eliminate its current “cattle call” system, moving to a more streamlined approach with assigned seating and introducing nine boarding groups!
Southwest plans to expand its boarding process from three to nine groups to improve order and efficiency. While the exact group details aren’t confirmed, priority passengers (elite members and those who pay extra) will board first, followed by general boarding from the back to the front of the plane. This change will also get rid of the early lineup system, similar to how other airlines do it.
✈️ In more news from the airline:
With new seating assignments coming early next year, along with the nine boarding groups, Southwest expects boarding times to be reduced by five to six minutes. The airline is concerned, though, that the new checked bag policy could slow things down with more gate-checked bags. No surprise there! Although, you still get a free checked bag with one of Southwest’s cobranded cards.
In another big move, Southwest has started rolling out “variable” award pricing for its Rapid Rewards program. This means point values will now change based on the flight, making it harder to predict how much your points will be worth. Some passengers, unfortunately, have already noticed worse value on flights like those to Hawaii.
So many changes, so little time to process them all.
