As Twitter works to tackle the spread of misinformation, it announced yesterday that it’s expanding Birdwatch, its community moderation program, to all US users.
The goal of the program is to have a diverse array of perspectives moderating posts by allowing selected fact-checkers to add notes and context to potentially misleading tweets. Twitter found that people are 15 to 35% less likely to retweet posts once they have the context.
The notes will now be visible to all US users but people still need to apply to the program to be able to add notes. Additionally, notes only appear on tweets if they are marked as helpful by other people who are Birdwatch contributors.
