You know that feeling you get after returning from a vacation, where you’re tempted to call out of work because you “need a vacation from your vacation”? It’s likely because you’re experiencing vacation burnout. You did too much while there, and you left too much to come home to.
The rise of the “nothing-cation”
New research from Expedia shows that Americans experienced holiday burnout in 2022 from jam-packed schedules, prompting them to plan more “nothing-cations” in the New Year. The term lends itself to more trips booked where just chillin’ is the main attraction. In typical vacationer fashion, that means everyone’s going south.
Life’s a beach
The research, which surveyed 4,000 U.S. travelers in December, found that more than a third reported feeling burnt out from the holiday season, and 96 percent of those surveyed planned to spend a portion of their next trip doing absolutely nothing. Expedia’s internal data shows January has already been a busy month for “nothing-cationers,” who’ve been busy booking trips to beach destinations, especially in Mexico and Hawaii.
