March is filled with great events. It’s the kickoff for spring and longer days ahead; Women’s History Month; and most importantly, my birthday month. It’s also the beginning of cherry blossom season.

Symbolic and stunning, cherry blossoms are a sight to behold beginning in March and lasting through mid-May. The flowers of the cherry tree show off their vibrant pink and white blossoms in the springtime, and from a single tree to a wealthy cluster, they create a jaw-dopping display—nature’s eye candy if you will.

The cherry tree is native to Japan, but can also be found in many other countries around the world, including the United States, Canada, and Europe. As you fill out your calendar this month and next, consider adding outdoorsy adventures to your travel plans that celebrate the allure of the fleeting cherry blossom season.

Where to spot cherry blossoms in the US

There are several locations in the US where you can see cherry blossoms in the springtime.

The National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, DC is one of the most famous cherry blossom events in the world. The festival takes place March 20 – April 16 this year and features a variety of events and activities, including a parade, fireworks, and cultural performances.

The Brooklyn Botanic Garden is home to over 200 cherry trees of different varieties, making it a popular spot to see cherry blossoms in the New York City area. Meanwhile, Central Park’s new cherry blossom tracker is showing an early bloom due to this year’s warm weather. One grove of Okame cherry trees is already in peak bloom.

The Portland Japanese Garden is a beautiful spot to see cherry blossoms in the Pacific Northwest. The garden features several varieties of cherry trees, and the blossoms usually peak in late March to early April.

Macon, Georgia is known as the “Cherry Blossom Capital of the World” and holds an annual International Cherry Blossom Festival. This year’s festival will take place March 17 – 26.
