If you’ve been considering a remote work lifestyle or living abroad, you might want to consult InterNation’s survey of the best and worst cities for expats.
The networking site recently surveyed nearly 12,000 expats in 181 countries to determine the rankings. Some of the categories they evaluated included quality of life, ease of settling in, financial costs, and expat essentials.
The Best
Valencia, Spain was named the top city for expats. Despite ranking poorly in the career opportunity category, the overall quality of life, safety, and affordable public transportation make it a top destination for expats. Dubai’s great work and life balance landed the metropolis in 2nd place. Mexico City rounded out the top three for being incredibly welcoming and affordable.
The Worst
Johannesburg, South Africa was named the worst place for expats. The city’s high costs, poor public transportation, and safety concerns make it the least appealing for expats. Notably, six European cities, including Paris and Rome, landed in the 10 worst cities.
The list should, of course, be taken with a grain of salt. Choosing where to work and live abroad is a very personal decision and it’s clear that one city does not fit all.
