This year has been all about picking up where we left off pre-Covid. Travel is thriving. And to kick off one last hoorah before 2023 hits, we’re seeing a trend that’s pulling people off their couches and into the world to watch the ball drop and the champagne pop.

Agoda data shows people are celebrating big to ring in the New Year, with a 29 percent rise in searches for countdown getaways in comparison to last year, along with an 88 percent increase in searches compared to 2020.

People are so giddy for getting out that travel searches far surpassed the data from 2019 by over 41 percent. Additionally, Agoda analyzed search data specific to New Year’s Eve travel by region, sharing top destinations in North America, Europe, and Asia.

Here’s where everyone’s celebrating NYE 2022

  • Urban destinations across the globe are the most sought-after destinations to celebrate.

  • In Asia, Tokyo takes the top spot, likely thanks to Japan reopening its borders to inbound tourism.

  • Bangkok, Thailand and Taipei, Taiwan are also hot spots in Asia this year.

  • As expected, New York City is the most popular destination for travelers, followed by Las Vegas, and Los Angeles.

  • In Europe, London takes number one. Paris comes in second. Less expected, but refreshing to see, the enchanting Turkish city of Istanbul is the third most-researched city for ringing in 2023.

  • In addition to city celebrations, many travelers are in search of kicking off 2023 with a trip to the beach, including destinations such as Pattaya and Bali in Asia, and Honolulu and Cancun in North America.
