Passports are going digital

Finnish citizens are set to be gifted a look at the potential future of passports as a new EU scheme prepares to test the use of digital travel documents in the country.

While a hard date has not been set while funding is approved, the testing period will involve a group of volunteers downloading an app that can be used to verify their identity and then send passport or travel information to the authorities, approving them for entry long before their actual arrival.

In theory, the passports could simplify the immigration process drastically and allow passengers to travel without a physical document. The volunteers will still need to carry their official passports during the trial in case anything goes wrong.

The initial tests are set to be between Finland and Croatia only, but it’s hoped it could roll out across the EU if the trial is successful.
