Sit back, relax, and lounge…or maybe not in 2023. 

After travel made a huge comeback in 2022, airlines and airports have been trying to figure out ways to mitigate the overcrowding happening in their lounges. Unfortunately, many airlines have decided to update their lounge rules for the worse or cut access to certain tiers of members. Here are all the 2023 lounge changes to be aware of:

American Express Centurion Lounges

The Centurion lounges have long been a great escape for frequent travelers but as of February 1st, Amex cardmembers are no longer allowed to bring in guests for free. The guest access perk was a big reason many travelers opted to get an Amex despite the steep fees on some cards. Don’t fret, though, here are ways to work around the new rule and bring a guest into the Amex lounges.

Delta Sky Clubs

Lounge crowding at Delta Sky Clubs has been so bad that the airline introduced priority entry lanes. Now, as of this year, Delta has made some major policy changes to its Sky Club access policies. Some of the biggest changes include:

• Non-elite SkyMiles members are no longer able to purchase lounge memberships.

• Those flying in basic economy are no longer allowed to enter the lounge. 

• Membership fees have jumped significantly. The lowest individual tier has jumped from $545 to $695, to give you an idea. 

• Diamond, Platinum, and Gold Medallion elite members are no longer granted lounge access unless they fly in premium economy.

Chase Sapphire Reserve Lounges

One positive change happening is the opening of the inaugural, and very fancy, Chase Sapphire Reserve lounge in Hong Kong. The lounge features a delicious menu with enticing dim sum options, specialty cocktails, private workstations, and a relaxation area. The interior was designed with relaxing and neutral hues so you can quell any travel stress. 

I’d love the chance to spend some time in this lounge and enjoy some wonton soup, but I don’t have any plans to go to Hong Kong soon. Luckily, it looks like the Dallas-Fort Worth and Austin airports might be getting their very own Chase lounges.
