New grab-and-go lounges aren’t the only change United Airlines is making. In 2023, they’ll be raising their current minimum level to earn MileagePlus Premier status back up to its original standard.
The airline had initially lowered the program requirements during the Covid-19 pandemic in order to reflect the dip in travel without penalizing travelers. In a customer email, United explained, “With travel now in full swing, our standard qualification requirements are returning. But we are giving you a boost and adding new qualifying activities to our 2023 MileagePlus Premier program to make achieving your status goals even easier.”
To give you an idea of the difference in rules, under adjusted rules, United currently requires travelers to fly on 8 premier qualifying flights to earn status, but in 2023 they will go back to requiring 12 flights and increased points thresholds.
On the plus side, the airlines is giving customers free points. They are automatically depositing premier qualifying points into people’s accounts based on what status level they are in. For instance, customers with Premier Silver status will get 500 points deposited. Those with the highest Premier 1k status will get 2,500 points.
