The UK has approved a new booster vaccine targeting Omicron and the original Covid strain. The vaccine was engineered by Moderna, one of the companies involved in the creation of the first few vaccine rollouts.
While rules and regulations surrounding Covid have virtually disappeared from many parts of the world, the infection is still circulating in high numbers. Australia is currently seeing the most deaths it’s had since the beginning of the pandemic, while US states are still seeing numbers tick up. Arizona, for example, saw 13 thousand cases and 59 deaths just last week.
The new booster vaccine, named a bivalent vaccine as it attacks two strains, had been examined by several medical boards in the UK to ensure its safety. Several experts have praised its apparent efficacy, especially in regards to the fast-spreading omicron variant.
There is currently no date for a roll-out nor any mention of whether the US will be looking into the vaccine, but Canada, Australia, and the EU are all expected to approve it in the coming weeks.
