Each year, TripAdvisor announces its list for the Travelers’ Choice Best of the Best Destination Awards. The travel platform analyzed the millions of reviews submitted by travelers on its site in the past 12 months to uncover the best destinations you should plan your travel around. This year’s just-released list spans six subcategories: Popular Destinations, Trending Destinations, Food Destinations, Best Places to Ski, Nature Destinations, and Best Places for Culture.

Naturally, I was particularly interested in what destinations are trending this year, and some of the locales on TripAdvisor’s list really surprised me. Cuba takes the top spot, with reviewers insistent on the allure of Old Havana. Hoi An, Vietnam came in second, with visitors highly suggesting you trek the Ba Na Hills and cross the otherwordly Golden Bridge. Several other Asian destinations made the list, including Siem Reap, Cambodia, Chiang Mai, Thailand, and Baku, Azerbaijan. Rounding out the top 10 is Krakow, Poland, where taking a vodka tour is a top priority.
America’s trending destinations are also surprising
Move over Big Apple, Sin City, and City of Angels! In 2023, expect more people to traverse less popular destinations. The top 10 places and activities include glacier tours in Juneau, Alaska, a history and hauntings tour in Salem, Massachusetts, and whale watching in San Juan Island, Washington.
