Traveling anywhere always feels like a once-in-a-lifetime experience but some trips truly can be. The Great American Solar Eclipse is still a year away but people are already booking their travel around the event on April 8, 2024.
Hotels on the pathway, from Texas to Maine, are already booked up but the best way to see the astronomical event might be on the water and Holland America is offering two cruise itineraries that will put travelers directly into the path of totality. Cruises, in particular, are at an advantage for viewing the event because they can reposition themselves to get the best view.
What are the trip offerings?
The first trip is a 22-day sailing from San Diego to Vancouver by way of Hawaii. The ship will position itself off the shores of Cabo San Lucas in Mexico just in time for the eclipse. This cruise will also have University of California San Diego Professor Adam Burgasser, an observational astrophysicist, onboard.
The second cruise offering is a bit shorter at only 14 days long. This sailing starts and ends in San Diego but takes guests through the Mexican Riviera. It also has an astronomy expert, Canadian lecturer Jim McParland, onboard. He will present on eclipse day and throughout the cruise.
The price of the 22-day sailing starts at $2,779 per person while the 14-day cruise starts at $3,259 per person.
This is the first total eclipse in seven years and who knows when the next one will be (well, probably astrophysicists…but still).
