As we all know, traveling the world isn’t free. Transportation, lodging, and food can get pretty pricey. But at least we don’t have to worry about paying for the places we’re visiting just to enter. Or do we?

U.S. citizens will soon be subjected to a fee if they want to be on royal soil

The United Kingdom has announced plans to require U.S. citizens to apply online and pay a fee before visiting the country. The move is an effort by the U.K. government to strengthen its borders, gaining more precise data on travelers through a fully digital system that will help avoid potential threats.

How to apply for a visit to the U.K.

U.S. and other non-visa foreign visitors hoping to visit the U.K. will be required to apply in advance, filling out an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) visa waiver. The application will prompt travelers to provide personal details, passport information, and security intel. Once submitted, hopeful visitors to the U.K. must wait up to three days to receive a decision. The new process will go into effect by the end of 2023.

So, how much is the fee?

The cost of the application is expected to be announced at a later date — likely as soon as we’re all done mulling over how frustrating having to fill out an application is in the first place.
