Sneaky remote workers are lying to their bosses

If you ever get the feeling that your co-workers are working a little too hard on their Google Meet backdrops, it’s possible they’re hiding more than a messy room.

Several remote workers (anonymous for obvious reasons) have admitted that they’ve moved abroad and are actively hiding it from their employers. Using VPNs to disguise their location and sound-proof co-working booths to hide any clues, many are enjoying secret lives abroad with all the trappings of an American salary.

The problem for employers lies in the possible complex tax situations that could stem from a now-overseas employee. Additionally, salaries are often calculated based on the average living expenses of the American city an employee is supposed to be based in, so some companies view those working in cheaper countries as taking advantage of the system.

Thankfully, working for DFC means we get a little more leeway in the remote work department. Our CEO’s office is currently in the back of a van, after all. Probably still has better coffee than the break room at my last gig, though.
