Shortly after Buckingham Palace announced that Queen Elizabeth II was under medical supervision, news of her passing broke. She was 96.
The news comes just days after she oversaw the transition from Prime Minister Boris Johnson to the newly elected Liz Truss.
Members of the royal family, including Prince Charles, his wife Camilla, and the Queen’s daughter, Princess Anne, were by her side in Balmoral Castle in Scotland. Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle did not make the trip out due to other obligations.
With a reign that lasted 70 years, the Queen was the world’s longest-serving monarch. She had recently been handing off more duties to Prince Charles as she’s faced mobility and other health issues.
Plans are now being made for the procession and for Prince Charles to take over as King.
