Do you love outdoor adventures but hate planning trips? Well, I have the perfect solution for you. Smithsonian Journeys has launched new, active trips for those of you who prefer hiking glaciers or visiting gorilla habitats instead of lounging in a beach chair.
What is Smithsonian Journeys?
The Smithsonian Institution is one of the largest and most respected museums and research complexes in the world. For years, they’ve educated the masses about history, the arts, science, and even travel. Now, they are expanding their presence in the travel realm with these so-called Journeys.
The program offers a collection of guided trips around the world that are all mapped out for you. There are 10 itineraries to choose from, each with 3-5 departure dates and a maximum of 18 guests. Each of the trips is led by a local guide and ranges in pace and activity level with the first trips kicking off in February 2024.
What kinds of journeys can we expect?
- The Glaciers and Waterfalls trip is based in Iceland where travelers will hike across a glacier and descend into lava tubes as they are educated about the local geology. This trip also takes guests to a Viking museum, black-sand beaches, and to see icebergs.
- Gorillas of Rwanda gives guests a once-in-a-lifetime chance to observe mountain gorillas up close with expert guides. This trip also takes people to the heart of Rwanda’s Kigali neighborhood where travelers can immerse themselves in Rwandan culture, history, and cuisine. There is an optional safari extensive as well.
- The Patagonia Hiking Adventure caught my attention the most. The 13-day hiking trip takes you through Chile and Argentina’s infamous Patagonia region. On this trip, travelers get to hike the famous W trek and walk amongst the glaciers and defyingly beautiful lakes. It’s not all hiking though. Guests start the trip off with a day at the vineyards in Chile’s Maipo Valley and bike to farms and wineries in the surrounding area. They will also get a chance to experience a more cosmopolitan side by staying in Santiago along the way.
A majority of the offerings cost between $3,300 and $5,600 per person but they include a local guide, daily excursions and activities, most meals, gratuities, airport transfers, and internal flights if needed.
