Just as it’s done to Twitter and Snapchat in the past, Instagram is now adding a new feature that mimics the popular Gen-Z app BeReal, where users post ‘spontaneous’ candid photos.
Instagram’s new “IG Candid Challenges” feature will send users a notification at a random time and give them only two minutes to share a candid photo. The new feature is nearly identical to the wildly popular BeReal app that also only gives users the chance to post within two minutes.
This is not the first time Instagram has added features that are almost replicas of other social media apps. For example, they recently made a divisive shift toward short video content amidst the popularity of TikTok, before backlash caused them to drop many proposed changes.
The feature is still only being internally tested right now and it’s unclear if it will ever be released to Instagram users for testing. Even so, it’s clear that the Meta-owned social media network is keeping its eyes on other apps in order to keep its own relevant.
