Do women really travel more than men?

Turns out, there may be a reason we hear more about Girls’ Trips than Dudes’ Trips. According to travel statistics, women travel more than men. Globally, 64% of travelers are female while 36% are male.

Yes, 91% of women book travel with friends. But they’re also more likely than men to travel solo. In fact, an impressive 85% of solo travelers are women. 

The statistics seem nearly improbable given that women often earn less and face more safety concerns while traveling than men. However, it seems that changing demographics have led more women to travel. A combination of declining marriage rates and women earning more has increased both dispensable income and freedom. 

Women are also more likely to seek out personal-growth-oriented and introspective experiences, and traveling through unfamiliar places will certainly prompt that. 

Why don’t men travel as much?

It’s not entirely clear why women travel so much more than men. But much of it seems to have to do with the planning aspect. It’s found that, whether with friends, family, or a group, 75-80% of all travel decisions are made by women. 

While this may be news to us, the travel industry has certainly noticed that women travel more. Next time you log on to social media or see a travel ad, perhaps you’ll notice that the images are typically geared toward women.
