Back in October, we shared the news that the hilly cityscape, Portugal, was launching a digital nomad visa. Now, we have some more information on the 1-year visa and how to apply.
The visa was designed to attract working professionals and since its launch late last year, Portugal has approved 200 visas. The majority of applicants hail from Brazil, the UK, and the US.
To qualify for the visa, applicants need to:
Earn at least 2,800 euros per month (4x Portugal’s minimum wage)
Come from a country that doesn’t fall within the European Union (EU) or the European Economic Area (EEA)
Be self-employed or employed by a company outside of Portugal
How do I apply?
If you’re considering applying for the visa, you’ll need to show proof of income for the last three months, submit tax residency documents, and provide proof of employment (either a contract or proof of self-employment). To apply, you’ll need to visit the Portuguese Consulate or Portugal’s immigration agency, Serviço de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras.
Is Portgual right for you?
Portugal is a crowd-pleaser. Whether you’re a laid-back surfer, a nature lover, or a city-dweller, you can find that all in Portugal. The major cities have invested a great deal in co-working spaces and making remote work easy for digital nomads. The only people that should probably think twice before picking Portugal as their remote work destination, are people who hate hills. It is, after all, known as the San Francisco of Europe.
