I don’t care how Hallmark-y it is to celebrate Valentine’s Day. If it means commemorating one of the most special feelings in the world — love — I’m here for it. And while I’m just as happy planning a candlelit dinner at home with my guy, many Americans are celebrating the “made-up holiday” on the road this year. According to a new report by travel insurance provider Allianz Partners, U.S. travelers’ interest in making travel plans for the holiday has jumped by 45 percent compared to 2022.
Most people are traveling stateside
The report, titled “Top Valentine’s Day Destinations,” reviewed more than 700,000 roundtrip flights departing U.S. airports between early to mid-February, and found that 71 percent of the itineraries are for domestic travel, and 29 percent are for international trips.
“Flight itineraries [are] soaring around the Valentine’s Day holiday,” says Daniel Durazo, director of external communications at Allianz Partners USA.
Travelers are seeking out a particular stateside destination
Florida reigned supreme among the top destinations for domestic Valentine’s Day travel, with Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami taking the top three spots. Honolulu and Kahului in Maui rounded out the top five, proving people are no doubt in need of sunshine and beaches this year.
Phoenix, Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, Las Vegas, and Denver rounded out the top 10 domestic destinations, suggesting metropolitan escapes are also top of mind.
Internationally, Americans are heading to Mexico
Americans planning to travel abroad are also looking to heat things up, choosing warm-weather destinations in Mexico. Cancun, Cabo, and Puerto Vallarta are the three most popular international spots for February getaways. Completing the top 10 were additional tropical escapes, including destinations in Aruba, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, U.S. Virgin Islands, Costa Rica, and Turks and Caicos.
