With a team that’s constantly on the move, we regularly experience our share of accommodation duds and studs. This week’s Rec from the Road is for anyone looking for a 5-star stay at a hostel price.
Before heading to Munich, Germany for Oktoberfest last week, I spent a day seeing the charming Austrian capital of Vienna. Given that I had set aside most of my budget to be spent on beers the size of a small child and an endless supply of German brats, I wasn’t looking to spend much just for a place to sleep.
This led me to spend a night in Vienna’s beautiful Grand Ferdinand hotel. But instead of paying the normal room rate, I only had to shell out €30 for the night thanks to one of the more unique offerings I’ve seen in an upscale hotel: hostel-style dorm rooms.
While every day spent on the other side of 30 years old moves me further away from hostel life, the deal was simply too good to pass up. I had an unbeatable location, full access to hotel amenities like the fitness center and rooftop pool, and an extra $200+ in my pocket. Best of all, my partner and I ended up having the full 8-bed dorm all to ourselves, giving us each our own shower and bathroom.
Just a heads up. While they’re listed on Grand Ferdinand’s site, the dorm rooms are only bookable through Airbnb.
