With airfare climbing as high as 30% this year, we’re all happy when we can stretch our money a little further on vacation.
To this end, popular travel app Omio has revealed the cheapest places to vacation in Europe — ranked with in a few key factors in mind: Number of (almost) free attractions, drink prices, average dinner costs for two people, free WiFi spots, sightseeing prices, transportation costs in each city, and more.
The top spot went to the home of the majestic Alhambra: Granada, Spain. The Spanish jewel locked in the #1 spot with 112 free attractions, low-cost 24-hour bus passes, and cheap beer that comes in around $2.60 for a glass.
Rounding out the top 5 were Bruges, Belgium; Venice, Italy; Valencia, Spain; and Edinburgh, Scotland. Spain dominated the list, claiming 4 of the top 10 spots. Meanwhile, Italy and the UK each claimed two a piece.
The biggest surprise on the list was Venice, which ranked third. It’s long been known as an expensive tourist trap, but apparently, the number of free museums and a large number of public drinking fountains make it possible to experience the magic of the canaled city on a budget.
As for the most expensive travel destination, you’ll want to avoid Switzerland. The top seven most expensive cities in Europe were all Swiss cities. No chocolate or watches for me unless I get a flight deal in my inbox.
