Usually the words “Spirit Airlines” conjure up images of people wearing all of their vacation clothing in an effort to avoid the budget carrier’s carry-on restrictions. What Spirit doesn’t charge in airfare, they make up for with things like seat selection and checked bag costs. But, that could all be changing soon.
In partnership with Status Match, Spirit is introducing a new status-matching program that will allow passengers to receive perks they would normally be charged for.
How does the partnership work?
Travelers that hold status with one of the 16 airline and 16 hotel loyalty programs will get access to the Free Spirit program. That program gives you access to all the perks and the status match is valid for one year.
What’s the catch?
Though you’ll get a bevy of perks (that are really more things I think every flight should offer for free), you’ll also need to pay for the status membership. Travelers will need to pay $49 for Free Spirit Silver status and $99 for Gold status.
Silver status travelers get access to shortcut security boarding, free seat selection upon check-in, and waived fees for overweight bags. Gold members get all those perks plus a free carry-on and checked baggage, free seat selection at booking, a complimentary drink and snack, and more.
Additionally, travelers can only apply to the status tier that matches their current loyalty program. For instance, if you’re a Delta Silver member, you can only apply for Spirit’s Silver status.
Who is this ideal for?
Status matching is a great way to get in on perks you’d otherwise not be privy to but this may not be ideal for everyone. However, if you regularly fly budget with Spirit and you already have loyalty status with another airline or hotel, this is a great way to reap the benefits. Otherwise, it might just be best to stick with your regular carrier and continue earning your status with them rather than spending money on Spirit’s program.
