China breaks diplomatic relations with the US

China has temporarily broken diplomatic relations with the United States on a number of fronts after Nancy Pelosi’s controversial visit to Taiwan.

The Chinese foreign ministry suspended cooperation on climate change, illegal immigrant repatriation, criminal matters, transnational crimes, and any talks between US and Chinese defense leaders.

Pelosi’s visit was widely condemned by Chinese officials, sparking tensions that resulted in the world’s largest country firing missiles into the sea surrounding Taiwan.

The complex relationship between Taiwan, China, and the US has been more tought than in recent years. US Presidents have traditionally walked a carefully placed line between outwardly supporting Taiwan and respecting its designation as a territory of China, but Biden has outwardly said the US would defend Taiwan militarily – although White House officials walked back his comments.
